Chronicle Watch Update:  Firewood

   UPDATE

The city of Oakland wants to help keep you warm this holiday season. Oakland Councilmember Jean Quan published a reminder in her newsletter this week encouraging folks to pick up the surplus firewood on Monterey Road near Park Boulevard. For years, locals have been coming to the spot for free wood left over from private and city tree-trimming. But a ChronicleWatch tipster complained earlier this fall that the firewood pile at the city-owned property was encouraging illegal dumping. After we reported on the problem in September, public works spokesman Niccolo De Luca said the city would monitor the area more carefully, and when we checked last week, there was no evidence of dumping. But according to Quan, even more wood is available now because the city recently built several firebreaks and also did extensive tree clearing in the Shepherd Canyon area. Some of the free logs are large and may require cutting, Quan advised. "It would also be wise to age the wood before you burn it," she said.
