Dear Neighbor,

Domestic Violence is the single largest cause of injury to women aged 15 to 44 in the U.S., more than muggings, car accidents, and rapes combined.  Last year in Oakland there were 5005 cases of Domestic Violence reported to the police; hundreds of sexually exploited teens were picked up. Each year in my district about half of the murders have been committed by men, husbands and lovers, who have killed their former partners; citywide the rate has been about ten percent of the murders.

To end the cycle of violence in our city and nation, we must break the silence around Domestic Violence.  My office has taken on this issue as a priority.  We have worked with police, non-profits, and other agencies to increase police and community resources. Some of the best new efforts in the nation are being launched in our city. Please take some time to learn about the available resources and join us in ending Domestic Violence.  Forward this email to your friends and co-workers.  Encourage those you know who need help to reach out.
