What's on at the big screen domed theater

Over 120 years ago, local businessman Anthony Chabot donated a telescope (a high tech instrument of instruction for its time) to the Oakland Public Schools.  The tradition of giving the children of Oakland and the region access to world class science education continues today at the new Chabot Space Science Center. I think it is a stunning symbol of what our City can do when we all work together for our kids.

I have been honored to be a co-founder and co-chair of the center, serving on the Chabot Board for over 13 years (first for the School Board and now as the City Council representative.) We take immense pride in seeing this dream come true. The center was designed with our Oakland's teachers and students in mind and thanks to the passage of Measure G funds more students will be served in new classrooms.

Children of all ages, 1 to 100 can find wonderful things to do at the center.  The center is open free to the public on the first Wednesday of each month, movie and planetarium shows are additional.  I encourage you to become a member if your are able.  The center is also developing an endowment to make sure all Oakland School children will benefit even in tough financial times like these and always needs volunteers.

Chabot is a joint powers agency of the Oakland Unified School District, the City of Oakland, East Bay Regional Park District, and East Bay Astronomical Society. It is a national affiliate of the Smithsonian.

LOCAL HERO:  Kingsley Wightman, known as Mr. Science to generations of Oakland students, enjoying the fulfillment of his dream in August 2000 at the dedication of the new center.  Wightman, former director of the Chabot Science Center, was a teacher for over four decades.  He worked at the old center from 1963 to 1988.  After his retirement he volunteered through 1992 to keep the old center open after Prop 13 cuts and the Hayward fault threatened to close it.

His love and delight in science inspired many of his students to build the New Chabot for new generations of students and teachers. The Wightman family continues to live in District 4.
