Preparing for the next damaging earthquake can help you survive and recover

San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee and I (center) welcomed 300 disaster safety specialists, policy makers, scientists and affordable housing advocates to the May 2, 2011 Seismic Risk Mitigation Leadership Conference to discuss enhancing earthquake readiness.
For Oakland and the Bay Area, it is not a matter of if we will have a major earthquake, but when. While our region has made great strides in preparing our residents and our institutions for the inevitable, there’s still much more we can do to get ready.
Clearly we know what to do to prepare; it’s a matter of being willing to do so, both on the part of individual citizens and our public entities.
Pre-disaster mitigation is far less expensive than post-disaster efforts, both in real dollars and in human resources. And while it continues to be a challenge when our dollars are stretched, there is much we can do as individuals and together to help us survive and recover after a major disaster.
