January is National Mentoring Month: Come to a Mentoring Mixer on Tuesday, January 17, 6-8 pm at Heart and Soul Center of Light, 1001 42nd Street.

At one time or another, we’ve benefited from a close relationship with an adult when we where young. Whether it was a parent, grandparent, teacher or other adult, having someone as an
official or unofficial mentor helped us stay focused on our future during the difficult times of growing up.

Today, many Oakland youth don’t have that kind of relationship. There are 300 foster youth
who age out of the Foster Youth system each year; 500 young people who return to Oakland
from Juvenile Hall, and 1200 chronically absent students. These 2000 students are the heart
of my Mentoring Initiative.

Working closely with the Oakland Unified School District and local nonprofits who provide academic and other support programs at school, afterschool and to at-risk populations, we are seeking dedicated Oaklanders to serve as volunteers and mentors.
